About Us

For the Musikalische Akademie, members of Mannheim’s National Theater Orchestra are the organizers and managers of one of the oldest concert series in Germany. Unique among German opera theater and symphonic orchestras is the Akademie’s democratic structure associated with its own choice of concert programs as well as its financial independence. These factors are essential for the artistic identity and self-confidence of the musicians. Eight times annually the orchestra, otherwise accustomed to resounding from the orchestra pit, presents itself on the stage of the Mozartsaal in Mannheim’s Rosengarten.

Creating culture through the artist’s own responsibility: This is a reality in Mannheim which has proven to be a successful and lasting concept.

The Musikalische Akademie of the National Theater Orchestra Mannheim e.V. which was founded in 1778 is represented by the following executive committee members:

  • 1. Chairman:
    Fritjof v. Gagern
  • 2. Chairman:
    Christiane Albert
  • Financial Manager:
    Patrick Koch
  • Assistant Financial Manager:
    Christoph Rox
  • Secretary:
    Christoph Prüfer
  • Advisory Board Members:
Jean-Jacques Goumaz, Julien Heichelbech, Georg Lustig, Eva Wombacher, Reinhard Philipp and Arne Roßbach

GMD Alexander Soddy

The General Music Director (GMD)

Since 2016/2017 Alexander Soddy is music director of the Nationaltheater Mannheim. Alexander Soddy was the orchestra’s absolutely favorite choice candidate during the search for a General Music Director for Mannheim. Having started out as a choirboy in his native Oxford, then continuing with conducting studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Music Theory at Cambridge followed by his musical ascent as an opera conductor in London, at the Hamburg Staatsoper, the Oper Klagenfurt and as assistant to Kirill Petrenko in Bayreuth – the vocal genre has always played a decisively large role in Alexander Soddy’s life as a musician – having laid an ideal foundation for working on the concert repertoire.
